Citizen Men’s BL5400-52A Eco-Drive Stainless Steel Sport Watch Reviews

After having this watch for 3 months I have had no problems with it. It keeps time well and looks nice, I receive compliments on it often. The crystal seams to be durable I do not have any scratches on mine after 3 months of use. It is a little hard to set the time and date so don’t loose your instruction booklet (I think you can find it on Citizen’s website if you do). Overall it is a quality timepiece and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I also like that I will never have to buy a battery for it, just another plus in my book.

I received this watch as a wedding gift from my bride/now wife. I had a hand in picking out the watch because I have very picky tastes when it comes to watches, and few watch bands fit my wrist without adding links.

Pros:
Durable & well-designed
Easy to use
Perpetual calendar
Classy

Cons:
Documentation limited
Chronograph limited

So far, this has been an outstanding watch. I ride horses and I do a lot of things that can be hard on watches, and so far, the watch face, band, and housing haven’t picked up so much as a nick in the 3 months that I’ve had it. I am very impressed with the durability of this watch. By comparison, other watches I have owned have had a scratched face within 1-2 months out at the barn.

I have had to do a full reset on my watch, and the instructions worked well. The watch hands were off slightly when I brought the watch home, and after reading the manual, I was able to determine the steps and follow them step-by-step without an issue. After two months, the watch hands have not wandered again, so this was just a one-off event.

The perpetual calendar is a nice feature. Having rolled through a couple of month changes, the day is still showing the correct day of the month. When they say set once and never set it again, they meant it.

If you are buying this watch for the chronograph feature, consider carefully whether you need something more robust than what this watch has. As explained to me by the jeweler (and covered in the manual), the chronograph only counts up to 1 hour. If you need to measure longer than an hour (useful when horseback riding), you may need to consider getting a stopwatch or a different watch.

I absolutely love the Eco-drive capability in this watch, though I haven’t owned it long enough that battery life would have been a problem. Since owning it, I have not received any power warnings from the watch, and it seems to charge just fine with normal daily wear.

One surprise I ran into with this watch is that the luminous watch hands and dial give off more light in a dark setting than other watches that I have owned, and they seem to hold their glow longer. I also own a Dakota Spider, and it always seems slow to build up enough energy for the watch hands to glow, and it never lasts all that long. I am very pleased with the luminescence of this watch in the dark.

There are only two things that disappoint me about Citizen with regards to this watch. Although it has an E820 movement, and the E820 manual is available online via Citizen (and other sites), it is a generic manual and not specific to this watch. Several sites make reference to the rotating inner dial, but I have not found any that provide explanation about this slide-rule and how to use it. Perhaps if I was a pilot it would be more obvious — but I would have expected at least some sort of explanation to be in the manual. The second concern is that the model number BL5400 is printed nowhere on the watch that I can see, so unless you know exactly what you are looking for, it is hard to find the specifications for this watch online.

I am glad my wife bought this watch for me, and I would definitely make the same decision again if I had it to do over. This is an outstanding watch.
